BACKROUND HEADCANON

Born on Christmas Island, he came from a family of six hedgehog cubs with himself being the smallest and the weakest. He was abandoned at a young age for being the problematic sickly runt and remembers little about the family he came from.
Luckily surviving being abandoned, he quickly learnt to fend for himself via using sickly body he was born with.
He ate a lot during these younger years in an attempt to build up his immune system, explaining the pot belly he used to have. He has since lost weight upon entering his teenage years, but he is still in the mindset of eating a lot when he can to give him that extra strength. A full stomach makes him awfully happy.
His durability during tough moments and his mindset never to give up also roots from his younger years, having to endure many sicknesses and physical pain by himself and never allowing himself to give up and lay down to the pain as giving up would mean the end for him.
Due to growing up on his own, he’s very streetwise. Bookish smarts fail him as he was never taught with books.
By the time he was ten years old, his physical health had improved a great deal. No longer getting sick as a weekly thing. Compared to his brothers and sisters, he was stronger, fitter and more powerful. He had also learnt to use the gift of his super speed, that he had discovered upon learning to walk and run, to his advantage.
Around that same time period he built his own small home and his own plane, the tornado, through trail and error. A year later, both his house and plan were complete.
Not longer after their completion however, he heard of an evil human who was capturing and enslaving small animals on a distant island via the small animal friends he had made over the years and he left Christmas island and his home to aid them. Thus beginning the events of Sonic 1.
He hasn’t returned to Christmas Island since.

POWERS&ABILITIES HEADCANON

Sonic’s super speed is an ability granted due to luck in his genes. None of his brothers or sisters had the same gene.
Sonic’s speed ability began to kick in at the age of five when he began to flee for his life from any kind of danger whilst he was trying to survive on his own.
Being born with said abilities does not mean that he was instantly good at using them. Like talents, these abilities had to be worked at. Sonic himself proves this as he trained his speed enough to the point where he can convert Chaos Energy into speed to create a boost of speed which can last five or so minutes at a time.
Rings are also a store of Chaos Energy that give Sonic that extra power to boost.(Explaining ring energy from Sonic Unleashed)
Super forms are granted to those who are born with said gene, if not, the super emeralds are needed for a close-to-the-super-form-transformation(like super Tails).
Chaos energy can store inside those who are born with said gene, allowing them to manipulate it in any way or form. ‘Sonic Wind’ and ‘Blue tornado’ is an example of Sonic unleashing his store of Chaos Energy as a powerful wind that can damage surfaces as strong as steel.
Sonic’s transformation into Dark Spine Sonic is caused by the store of negative Chaos Energy in his body being tampered with either by his emotions or by an outside power source. The world rings were that outside power source in secret rings as well as Sonic’s emotions being rather rocky at the time. Chaos Emeralds can act as that outside power source, therefore as long as Sonic has a Chaos Emerald on him, he has a chance of transformation in Dark Spine Sonic. {Dark Sonic = Dark Spine Sonic basically, considering that Dark Sonic is not game canon.}
The Super Emeralds can be harnessed by anyone, Sonic is not a special snowflake for being able to use their abilities. Being combined with the powers of the Chaos Emeralds though, he can take on the form of Hyper Sonic who is just that tiny step up more powerful than Super Sonic.

GENERAL HEADCANON

Sonic is generally on the move the majority of the time, however, his official home is a small cabin on top of Tails’ workshop where he has his own small room.
He is quite musically talented, enjoying singing and playing guitar as things to when he’s not saving the world.
He can’t swim, but he isn’t terrified of water. He is wary due to bad experiences, but he is far from scared senseless of the stuff.
His favourite colour is red.
He has no interest in romance, claiming himself to be too cool to fall in love. He would consider himself asexual.
He can be very sort tempered and quick to lash out and jump into fights.
He can also be very cocky and big headed.
He enjoys relaxing and taking it easy more than running around like a headless chicken. With that said, he does enjoy exploring though.
Due to growing up without education, Sonic’s speech is far from perfect. He uses a lot of slang, and will sometimes stumble over his own words.

Sonic keeps every item from his adventures although he does not wear them all that often, he still has Chips bracelet, his Soap Shoes and even the Inhibitor ring that Shadow dropped at the end of Sonic Adventure 2. This all includes all of his add on’s that gave him powers such as the Crystal ring, Bounce Bracelet, Magic gloves, Mystic Melody Flute, Flame Ring, Air Boost Shoes, Light Speed Shoes, Stomping Shoes and the Wall Jump Shoes.
He’s a skilled driver.
He’s also a skilled sword fighter, although his skills wouldn’t come close to any of those in the book of Camelot.
He enjoys breakdancing and likes to DJ now and then.
His favourite kind of music is Rock Music.
Sonic has control over his quills, when curling up, angry, shock or upset they will stick out at a sharp point. They are safe to touch and stroke when flat however.
He isn’t very fond of whales.
The soles of all of Sonic’s shoes are made of metal, they have to be replaced at various points in his life as his super speed does wear them down.
Sonic cannot travel at high speeds without his shoes as his feet would burn up.
Sonic’s quills do naturally fall out due to new ones pushing their way through.
He doesn’t have very great manners due to him growing up alone.
He tends to whistle an awful lot.
He likes to think he’s cool, in reality he’s super cheesy and awkward.
